Ali Sonday, a 30-year-old Senior Attorney from the Western Cape, was sent packing in a shocking twist on the latest episode of MasterChef South Africa. Just a week after winning the season's first episode and scooping a sleek Beko fridge, Ali's fiery ambitions were doused when his pan caught fire and his dish didn't quite cut it with the judges.
The pressure was on in episode two, where contestants had to reimagine the judges' "last supper" meals in just 75 minutes. Ali drew Chef Katlego Mlambo's pap, lamb chops, and chakalaka combo, but his lack of experience with pap and a blazing hot pan proved a recipe for disaster.
Despite his efforts to spice things up with an Indian twist, the judges weren't impressed with Ali's "Tandoori lamb chop with tomato chutney and pap infused with curry leaves". Chef Katlego slammed the tomato chutney as "bitter and unpleasant", while Judge Justine Drake noted that burnt food is a cardinal sin in the MasterChef kitchen.
And just like that, Ali's MasterChef journey was over.
On the bright side, Benjie stole the show with his show-stopping lamb cutlet dish, inspired by Zola Nene's last supper. The judges were waving their aprons in awe!
